Christmas Morning

Today was a great Christmas morning. I got to watch my nieces see their presents from Santa Claus and then shred into all of their wrapped gifts. We had a fire going to all of the wrapping paper went to feeding the fire which I found fun. I made out way better than I thought I would. I received Team Fatty cycling bibs, socks, and water bottle. I also was lucky enough to unwrap workout clothes, books, Epic Mickey video game, slippers, and candy.

Motivation lost and then found.

I have been having a big problem with motivation lately.  It has up and vanished in the middle of the night like a one night stand sneaking out after a long night of dirty good times.  Just when I thought it was gone for good, Fatty saves the day!  He has come up with the Lose 10 Pounds By Christmas challenge.  It is a pretty simple concept on paper.  You have from now until Christmas to lose at least 10 pounds. No problem right? Yeah right.  We are in the middle of the biggest eating holiday known to man.  What about Thanksgivings you say? HA, I laugh at your naive thinking.  Thanksgiving is ONE day of big eating.  I know it is a lot of eating on that one day but it is still just one.  The Christmas season (which I love) goes on and on and on.  Christmas parties that are loaded with all kinds of sweets, treats, and meats (odd I know but it rhymed). Co-workers and friends baking cookies and pies and other scrumptious delights that you cannot refuse. How can you compare a month of this to one day of turkey and trimmings?  Now imagine trying to lose 10 pounds under those circumstances.  Not so easy peasy lemon squeezy now is it smarty pants? No it isn't, not at all.  Fatty knows this and decided to sweeten the deal. Not that losing 10 pounds during Christmas isn't enough of reward for anyone but Fatty has graciously decided to throw in some prizes to be randomly awarded to some lucky winners that were able to conquer this challenge.  Can you imagine losing 10 pounds during the holiday season AND win a jersey (some signed by various cyclist and some brand new), shirt, water bottles, or one of the other excellent rewards?  Apparently many more than he thought possible saw themselves in the drive to drop pounds.  Fatty thought that maybe a handful of dedicated Team Fatty members would come forward to walk with him in this journey but he got a huge shock. There have been over 1100 comments on that post about his challenge and more than 800 people attempting his challenge.  Team Fatty has truly united to support each other to lose the weight.  Poor Fatty has a serious spreadsheet nightmare to keep track of now. I need to go dig out my 4 leafed clover for this one.

Thanksgiving Day!

I am so thankful to be able to spend this day with all of my family.  I traveled up to my older sisters house where my parents and my other two sisters, three brother in-laws, six nieces, one nephew, and my grandmother.  It's a packed house to say the least.  Kids running all over the place, the activity, noise, and chaos of it all.......I love it.  It reminds me of growing up in a big house and I feel totally at ease in it.  Being single still and it typically being just me and my two beagles, I miss it.  I guess if you didn't grow up in a big loud Irish background family, it wouldn't make sense to you.  I know many only children that would be looking at me like I was insane right now.  I don't know what to tell you.  It feels like home to me. I can (and did) fall asleep on the couch, right in the eye of the storm. I thank God that I have this big of a family and that I get to spend this time with them all. I wouldn't change it for all the money in the world.  I hope everyone has as great of a Thanksgiving day as I have had.

It's Movember!!

First, DC Rainmaker is giving away a Garmin Forerunner 210 this month.  Follow the link to find out more.

I am participating in Movember this month.  The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.  The idea is to start with a clean shaven face and grow a moustache throughout the month.  The fun is to decide what style you want to grow.  Do you try to grow a Magnum PI moustache or maybe a fu manchu. The choices are endless (sort of).  I am thinking about growing a civil war style like the picture below.
I am sure at the end of the month it will be pretty sweet.  The point of something like this is that it attracts more attention than a regular moustache. I will get more inquiries about my moustache which gives me more opportunity to raise awareness (and hopefully funds) about prostate cancer which is the number one cancer affecting men.  The funds that are raised go to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG .
Watch the following movie about Movember. Then please donate to the fund by following this link

I know I have totally been slacking on the blog lately. I was sick for a week and a half so I wasn't working out while I tried to shake that off. That was a mistake as getting back into the swing was rough. Last Thursday I went to the bike shop to get a bike fitting since I never really ha one. Bob at Inside Out Sports did an awesome fitting for me. He totally improved the bike for me. It is like riding a totally new bike.

This is good since I was still run down due to sickness on Friday when I rode the hill course. I did ok physically but mentally I was defeated by the hills. That is the part that really got to me. I really need to HTFU!
Good news! The Giros Ionos helmet signed by Levi Leipheimer that I won in Fatty's give away came last week. It fits great and feels so light on my head. I love the custom graphics.

I started doing P90X today. I realize now what a soft marshmallow man that I am. I can see that it is going to be an extremely long 90 days. That is OK, every time that I feel I am going to throw up means I am pushing myself to be a smaller marshmallow. I will shift from jumbo size to regular and then to the tiny hot cocoa marshmallows.

Seal it up

It is the day I hate to see come. It signifies the true end to the summer in my mind.  No more diving in the pool after a jog in the blistering heat. No more coming home from work and doing laps until dusk. Le sigh. The cover has been stretched tight over the crystal clear cool water.  The pool is all tucked in and hibernating for the winter. I have decided that I am going to focus on cycling and running this winter.  After the new year I will find a pool to start the swim training again.  I just feel like my cycling and running really need the most work. That and saving the money I would have to pay to a pool means more bike upgrades. I know I don't have to convince you that I really really NEED them right? I knew you would totally understand.  Anyway, I will miss the convenience of a pool right outside the door.  Hopefully it will be an early spring and that cover can come off sooner than usual.  You hear that Punxsutawney Phil?!?!?!?! You had better if you know what's good for you.
On a good note, I did manage to drag myself out onto the bike for a 9 mile ride on the hill loop.  It wasn't easy since I am still recovering from the nasty sickness.  The lake of mucus in my head seems to have dried up for the most part but I was still feeling drained and was winded way to easy.  I did better on the hills than last week but was completely wiped out at the end.  I was rewarded for my hard ride up and down hills when I went to take a shower at work only to learn that there was no hot water.  When I say no hot water, I don't mean there was just a little bit, I mean not a drop of slightly warm water at all.  It was like the water was seconds from freezing right before it came out of the shower head.  After whining to myself for a few minutes I decided to take the plunge so to speak.  It was still worth the ride and the arctic water seemed to help me breathe better.
Today's weight is 276.

PS DC RAINMAKER is giving away a Timex Global Trainer.  Go here to have a chance at it.

The Sickness

UGH! I woke up today feeling like I had been hit by a mucus train. My head is so stuffed up with snot I cannot even think straight. My throat is scratchy and I am achy all over. All I can think is that I should stay home and sleep it off. Of course, NO LUCK. I had to go into work because I had to much going on today. Talk about an excellent start to the day. I downed my vitamin and an airborne and started getting ready for work. I trudged through the day in a haze and was actually able to get some things accomplished. All day all I could think about was getting home and crawling into the bed. Finally I was able to get out of the office and live out my daydream. After a quick dinner and some meds I was headed to bed. This day was finally starting to look up. I checked my email before crawling into bed and saw an email from Fatty. Now this is a very curious thing indeed. I am just a lowly beginning cyclist. Why is the famous hardcore cyclist Fatty emailing me. It turns out that Fatty was to make my day an awesome day. Even as sick as I was. It turns out that I won a Custom-Painted Giro Ionos Helmet signed by Levi Leipheimer!! I am secretly hoping that the grand prize winner decides they don't want Levi's mountain bike and I am asked to step-up and take it but I am stoked about this helmet. So a day that started horribly has now ended fantastically. Thank you Fatty! Not only for the helmet but for all of the good and awesome things that you do for cancer awareness.
Today I weighed in at 277.

The BET!

I don't know how in the world I get myself into these situations. Let me see if I can figure it out with you. My weight has been getting out of control over the years. I was at my highest weight a couple of months ago when I weighed myself and realized I was at 295. HOLY CRAP!! How in the world did this happen?!?! Well, if I am going to be honest, it could be that I wasn't working out, eating out all the time, eating too much, and way too much late night snacking. Once I realized how out of control my weight had gotten, I decided to do something about it. I kept trying to get into a workout schedule but it was more miss than hit.
While at a BBQ my brother-in-law says to his cousin that we should all do something that will give us a goal to get into working out and becoming healthier. The idea was a good one and we kicked around some ideas. Loser had to do dishes or wash clothes. No, that's no good. That is when the goofy jokes started. The loser has to walk 2 miles around a a thong. Better, but nobody was risking a thong. That and nobody needs to see that action. Finally we hit the magic combination. The loser has to hike 2 miles up a mountain and 2 miles back down. That's nothing you say? Wait for it........he has to do this in the middle of winter wearing a speedo and a sombrero. Oh yeah, sexy isn't it?

Except that is not what any of us will look like. Try this image, but add a sombrero.

Oh yeah baby! That is right. It is like hot sex on a platter for you. GET SOME!
OK, now that you are done vomiting....wipe your chin, you have some puke on it. So the final decision was that everyone throws in $20. The contest is to see who loses the highest percentage of weight. The winner will win the $60, the second place guy is just glad not to be the last place guy and the last place guy is hiking 2 miles up the mountain and 2 miles back down in the speedo and sombrero.
So far I have dropped some weight but I need to do much better. The bi-weekly weigh ins show that I am the second place guy. Chris has come on strong to everyone's surprise, lost 22 lbs and is way ahead in first place. Huffy is currently the 3rd place guy but he is tricky. He will just stop eating for 2 weeks to avoid the speedo hike.
My starting weight was 286 lbs. Today I weighed in at 278.

I started a new bike loop today that kicked my butt much worse than I thought it would. The hills are much bigger than Billy and I thought from the car (they always are). We managed to do 9 miles very slowly. We will now attack it 3 days a week until the hills become laughable. On the weekend we are going to find a nice flat course to churn out the miles. That way we are getting distance training and hill training. I am going to make Huffy do the Couch 2 5k program with me. He needs to drop the weight as bad as I do.

Once again the results of my procrastination stare me I'm the face. I decided that I needed to get into better shape because I was the heaviest I have ever been and I didn't feel very fit at all. In order to make sure I keep going to the gym and becoming more healthy I decide that I should sign up for a sprint triathlon. That would surely keep me on track......right? Wrong. I did pretty good with training in the beginning but then work got to be hectic and school started and took more time than I had thought. Oh yeah, did I mention that I had decided to go back to college too? I wonder what goes on in the decision making part of my brain sometimes. I allowed these to push out the training and kept thinking "OK, I will pick it back up soon. I am just behind right now. Plenty of time before the event". Here I sit now, two days before the event and relatively no training. I did do a 3.2 mile walk with jogging on the downhill parts just to see if I could even pull that off. I was able to even though it was rough on me. I have now decided that I signed up for this event so I am going to do it. This is the punishment I get for not following the plan. My goal is really just to complete the sprint tri in under the cut off of 3 hours.

I am so tired this morning. Not to mention I am so totally running late to work. I didn't get to bed until 1am last night. I decided to do some BBQ last night in the new smoker. I smoked a pork butt (Boston butt) and some spare ribs. The pork butt went on first but still very late at 1:30pm. I should have put it on and then gone to church. At about 3:30pm I put the ribs on. I added wood chips a couple times and added apple cider to the "water pan". The ribs got mopped at 6:30pm and came off at 7pm. They were really good. Next time I am going to leave them another 30 minutes to get a more fall of the bone effect. At 10 pm the pork butt was 165 degrees. I needed it at 185-190. I pulled it off, wrapped it in foil and put it in and oven at 225 degrees. At 11:45pm it was at the right temp and I pulled it out and let it sit for 45 minutes. I passed out on the couch during this time. When I woke up I grabbed 2 forks and pulled the pork apart and dropped it into some Tupperware. I made sure to sample some meat from all parts and seperated the fatty sections into another Tupperware for the dogs. The meats was awesome! So tender and juicy with great flavor. I think my first time with the smoker went really well and I learned some great lessons. I can't wait until next time.

I am behind in the thought dumps. I rented a Harley Fat Boy Lo for the day on my birthday. I am used to sportbikes but I have always liked Harleys and I have been wanting to try them out. That bike was awesome. It was like riding around on a lazyboy. It was so smooth and comfortable. I really enjoyed it. I will be renting all the other models that I can so that I can figure out what I want to own. Then I will stalk it and buy it when I can pull it off.

AC install

I just spent all day helping to install a new HVAC unit at my brother in-laws place. It was a learning experience to say the least. End result is a super cold house. A job well done deserving of a few beers.

Awesome week!

It has been an awesome week for sure! I am really enjoying the new job. Free lunch all week plus a free dinner. To add a cherry on top we have today off. You just can't beat that for a first week. I have to admit that I did remote in to do a few work things today. That's how much I enjoy the job.
I think today I will hang out with my nieces and might dye some eggs.

Too damn early

I will never understand people that like to have early morning meetings. I am headed to a breakfast meeting at 7:30am. Why? I have no idea why I agreed to this. I am going to need a serious nap later.

Damn rain

Who ordered all of this rain? I drove down to GA to help my parents out and now I find myself sitting around waiting. I hate that. I did find out that the new job starts on the 22nd. I would have liked to start earlier but the 22nd works. I am ready to get back in the work world. Until the 22nd I will try to get in as many motorcycle rides as I can. Well, once I get home that is. It should be done raining by then.

I signed the offer letter on my new job today! I am very excited (and relieved) about it. I have to go do the drug test tomorrow. No worries there. After I take the test I am loading up the dogs into the car and heading to see the folks. They need a little help with a few things so I figure I will help them out before the chaos of the new job starts.
I am ready for St Patty's day!! I get to break out my House of Pain Adidas. I love St Patty's day! Bring on the Guinness and Jameson!

Big day

Today is a big day. I am suiting up for an onsite interview. It is
with a good company with great growth potential. Most of all it would
be a much needed change in my life. The money bucket is getting to be
a little too low for my comfort. I need to rebuild my nest egg and get
back to school after what seems like forever.
On a side note, I have realized that working it out with the ex-
girlfriend is not going to happen. How do you work things out with
someone who is already dating someone else and crashing at each others
houses? She keeps telling me that she wants me back and to just move
home but in the next sentence talks about how she and the new guy were
at her moms talking with her. Seriously? All I see is a woman that is
afraid to be alone. I can't even think about sleeping next to someone
else and she is introducing him to everyone she knows. Oh well. I need
to focus on today's big meeting.
Say a prayer for me.

Crumbling down

It has been a long and crazy week. Due to continuing issues with my girlfriend I have moved out of the house. It has been extremely har for me but I think it was the right choice. It was best for both of us to get out of the environment that we had created. She says she wants to work it out but her actions show no signs of that. I can't say that I am entirely surprised. It still hurts tho. We will see what the future holds.

I love this movie.

The things we want

I have finally come to the conclusion that I need a new PC so I can play games. The laptop I have now has gotten to the point that it is good for surfing but it just can't handle the games anymore. Once I get $ back from the tax man I will have to build a desktop for gaming. A new job would sure come in handy these days. I am so ready for a vacation. Plus I want to get a Weber 22” Smokey Mountain Cooker. That thing is dead sexy. The list of wants is long that is for sure.

That kinda mood

For some reason I am in the mood to hang out at the bar and chat with
people at random. That always seems to be a good time. I guess I will
be doing that this weekend while watching the Saints win the
Superbowl. That isn't as chill a time though.

Job hunt

The plan for tomorrow is to really buckle down and send out a ton of resumes. I need to find a new job if for nothing else than my own sanity. Being stuck in the house day after day is taking its toll on me. I am a pretty social person and have missed the interaction with co-workers. Not my old co-workers as I talk to the ones I liked from my last job. The big thing is that I moved when I quit the last job and I haven't found a new group a friends to hang out with. I am also ready to be off this shoestring budget that I have to be on. Blech. Wish me luck!

ATL Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands

I was set to be a chaperon for a bunch of HS kids on a trip to ATL to see the Honda Battle of the Bands. The weather decided to try and cause our trip to be cancelled. Fortunately, the snow and ice didn't quite cause enough chaos to cancel the trip. It did however put us behind schedule by a few hours. The bus company then decided to help the weather and the bus didn't show up. After many calls we found out that the driver ran into thick traffic and decided to turn around. Seriously? He turned around because of traffic? Shouldn't a bus driver be used to traffic? Thankfully, we hunted down another bus and got the trip back on the road. After a long drive to ATL we ran into the Georgia Dome since we were running late. 8 marching bands from HBCU colleges came to entertain us and Ludacris did a quick show in the middle of it all. The show was really amazing! Ludracris was off the hook! It is amazing to see these huge marching bands play while doing elaborate marches. After the show we walked the kids to Hard Rock Cafe for some food before loading them onto the bus headed home. Hard Rock isn't really my thing but they are great with the kids. The kids had a lot of fun and really enjoyed themselves. I didn't get home until LATE LATE LATE so Sunday was a sleep in day. I did get up to take care of the dogs and make some food but it was mostly a TV day in bed.

A friend of mine gave me a heads up to a cool show in ATL later this month. It looks like I might be heading back there again. LOL There is an awesome show called Nuclear Cowboyz. It combines freestyle motocross with theatrical production. It is like Mad Max on acid. My kind of place. If I do get there I will have a big report on it. :)

I found this guy at a beach bar. Sadly I could not fond the pot of gold.
Apparently I can send blog updates and pictures thru txt. This is actually a test of that feature. Sweet.

They never saw it coming.

Welcome to the first post on the Fantastically Mundane Tales of SquirrelHead! I have no idea what this blog will bring as it will most likely be a brain dump at various times in my life. Just the thought of it kind of makes me sorry for anyone that stumbles across it. You may get to witness some fun projects here and there if you are lucky. Good luck to us both.
